The 10th Annual Las Vegas Science and Technology Festival (LVSTF) is April 23 - April 30, 2021.  All events are free and all will be virtual.  Join us for many exciting and engaging opportunities for families, educators, and students! 

Some of the events will have limited space due to the engaging, interactive nature.  All events are virtual and require registration at www.scifest.vegas.  Registration will open April 14, so check out the attached brochure and "Upcoming Events" on the LVSTF Website.  Select which events you want to attend, then mark your calendar for April 14--Registration Opening Day.

The Southern Nevada local section of the American Chemical Society would like to invite all K-12th-grade students to participate in the 2021 illustrated poem contest.  All submissions will need to be uploaded online directly through the ACS website and a media release is part of the submission process.  Please see the attached flyer for all details. Entries due 4/25/21.

Ecology Project International (EPI); has been engaging teachers and students in experiential, place-based science learning since 2000—in Yellowstone, Mexico, Galapagos, Hawaii,…

EPI would like to start offering more PD to teachers, and want to know what would be most useful for them. Please share this information with teachers you know who might appreciate place-based, experiential, ecologically-based PD.

This survey should take 10 minutes to complete. It will be used to help EPI create PD opportunities that will fit teachers’ needs.

Those who complete the survey will be entered to win one of several raffle prizes: $100 off an upcoming EPI Educator course, $25 gift card to EPI's online store, or a free EPI hydro flask.

The Nevada Science Olympiad board is seeking qualified event supervisors for the 2021 Virtual Nevada State Tournament to be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021.

Below is a list of the events and times that are still in need of event supervisors. More information about the event rules can be found at http://store.soinc.org/.

Interested teachers should send an email to support@nevadaso.org by Wednesday, April 7th, 2021 and include:

• Contact information,

• Event preference/availability,

• Disclosure of any affiliation to a competing team that may be viewed as a conflict of interest. 

Those that email their interest and are approved by the Nevada Science Olympiad Tournament Director will receive additional information to register as an event supervisor. CCSD teachers will receive extra duty pay of 4 hours for each event and level supervised (1 hour to log into the Science Olympiad online testing platform and preview the test prior to the competition, 1 hour for proctoring the event, and 2 hours to grade the tests and turn in the final scores).

The BackyardBio global nature campaign (https://www.backyardbio.net/) is being run through the non-profit Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants ( https://www.exploringbytheseat.com/).

This May, as a fun, engaging and socially distant friendly activity, they're partnering with groups worldwide on encouraging the public and especially classrooms to get outdoors to more closely connect with all their local biodiversity. 

By photographing what they discover and sharing their images on social media (#backyardbio), the INaturalist platform (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyardbio)  and through direct connections with other similar aged classes worldwide the hope is to foster a love of wildlife that spans countries and continents.

Lab-Aids is hosting a free webinar series that pertains to science teachers in middle and upper grades. You do not need to be using Lab-Aids materials to benefit from these teaching strategies. 

The webinars will be held every other Thursday, from 3:30 to 4:15 PST. If you can’t make it, you can still register to receive a recording.

Clark County School District 7th Grade Science Teachers Only

The M-PLANS (Motivation Planning Lessons to Activate eNgagement in Science) project is currently working with 7th grade science teachers in CCSD and Michigan to design and develop a teacher professional learning (PL) experience to support science teachers in creating a more motivating and engaging experience for students in their classrooms. The project is seeking additional 7th grade science teachers to join in this work for the 2021-2022 school year.
