    Engaging Multilingual Learners in Science: Making Sense of Phenomena is a free, interactive eWorkshop designed specifically for science educators and language educators who support multilingual learners in science classrooms.

    This offering provides multiple strategies for engaging multilingual students in the central work of sensemaking in science. Through video, interactions, and reflection activities, science and language educators will learn to:

    • Recognize the critical role of eliciting student ideas in science teaching and learning
    • Identify considerations for selecting science phenomena that are relevant to students and effective for teaching science ideas
    • Support student agency and authority in reasoning about phenomena
    • Use teaching strategies that promote language development in the context of sense making

    Completing the four modules in this eWorkshop will take about 3-4 hours.

    With Earth Month on the horizon, how can you help students discover their own climate solutions super powers? Join Matt Scott, storytelling lead at Project Drawdown and former NASA global community lead and storyteller, to discover ways you can engage your students in identifying their ways to serve as problem-solvers in the face of climate change. Learn about Project Drawdown and some of the latest tools you can use to spread awareness, shift attitudes, and spark action, particularly with underrepresented communities and climate justice in mind.

    Outstanding Earth Science Teacher (OEST) awards are given for "exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth Sciences at the pre-college level." Any teacher or other K-12 educator who covers a significant amount of earth science content with their students is eligible. Ten national finalists are selected, one from each National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) regional section. Some sections also recognize state winners. Individuals may apply themselves or nominate a colleague for the award.

    Girls Who Code (GWC) is an international nonprofit offering free and flexible coding resources for our community! 

    When you sign up to start a GWC Club, you’ll get access to everything you need -- including training, comprehensive resources, 120+ hours of easy-to-use and flexible coding curriculum for 3-12th graders, and even free t-shirts and other swag for each of your Club members. Clubs curriculum features coding tutorials for all skill levels, inspiring women in tech, community-building activities to increase confidence, and project-based learning related to activism. You don’t need any prior coding experience to get started! Plus -- all genders are welcome in this girls-supportive environment.

    High school students are invited to apply for the Spring 2022 SISTEM (Student Interactions with Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program.  This program, sponsored by the UNLV Howard Hughes College of Engineering, is a series of talks and hands-on activities that will allow high school students to learn about careers and research in STEM.  Through five engaging sessions, participating students will be able to connect with STEM professionals in various fields.  Completion of the program will be a great addition to a student's academic resume. Applications are being accepted until February 25th.  Participants may choose between attending in person on the UNLV campus (limited number of spaces) or attending remotely by Zoom. High school students outside of southern Nevada may sign up to attend remotely. There is no cost to participate, but students who are accepted into the program are expected to participate in all five sessions which are held on five Wednesday evenings in March/April.

    OSIT has just released another round of K-5 STEM grants. You’ll find the Requests for Applications for both the K-5 STEM Classroom Grant ($1,500/classroom) and the K-5 STEM Program Grant ($20,000/school).

    Both applications are due February 18th. Please share with any (Nevada) K-5 schools or teachers you support.

    Please note, the K-5 STEM Program Grant is available for schools to launch programs from STEMList and is not available for the program’s ongoing costs.

    The NV Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is underway for 2022, and we invite you to participate! Contest is open to youth through age 18 (K-12) and celebrates waterfowl conservation through the arts.  

     

    The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is a dynamic art- and science-based curriculum that teaches wetland and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school. The program encourages students to explore their natural world, invites them to investigate biology and wildlife management principles and challenges them to express and share what they have learned with others.  

     

    Don't forget that our deadline and entry mailing address have changed!   

     

    New Deadline: March 1, 2022. All entries must be postmarked by March 1, 2022. Entries received after March 10 will not qualify for the contest.

    Mojave Max Tortoise Talks and Emergence Contest are Open! 


    Hello K-5th grade teachers, 


    The Mojave Max education team is pleased to share that Mojave Max Tortoise Talks and the Emergence Contest are open for the spring semester! The Mojave Max program is a long-running conservation program that teaches students to 'Respect, Protect, and Enjoy' the Mojave Desert. 


    For more information on each program, click on the links or scan the QR codes in the attached flier. More than one class is encouraged to attend a Tortoise Talk presentation at a time and the Emergence Contest is open now!
