Congratulations to Steve Gaskill from K.O. Knudson JHS in Las Vegas and his students who were just named national finalists in Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.  They get $50,000 and a trip to New York to pitch their idea to Samsung!

Their project was to design better bus benches for the Las Vegas summers.  Their solution was to replace the RTC's current steel benches with benches out of concrete made using recycled sunflower stalk aggregates.  This was one of the top ten finalists in the country.

The Regional STEM Networks’ High-Quality STEM, Equity and Awareness Subcommittees publish new tools
The Regional STEM Networks’ Subcommittees, in collaboration with OSIT, have developed a collection of Nevada-specific tools using research and rigorous independent evaluation. A High-Quality STEM rubric was developed to provide guidance for measuring the quality of STEM programs. The Equity tool compiles best practices regarding increasing equity in STEM. The Awareness tool provides examples of how various stakeholders can increase awareness of STEM, the benefits of STEM, and local STEM opportunities.

The Nevada Division of Minerals and the Nevada Mining Association would like to invite you to join us April 12-13 for the 31^st Annual Southern Nevada Earth Science Education Two-Day Workshop. This PDE training is completely free and provides the opportunity to earn one PDE credit. The two-day workshop will take place in-person at Faith Lutheran Middle School and High School located at 2015 S. Hualapai Way, Las Vegas 89117 (see map below). We are offering two fun-filled days of rocks, minerals, and mining. On day one, participants will spend the day rotating between five classroom sessions. Two of the sessions are required for all participants and the remaining three sessions offer a variety of electives so participants can choose the topic best suited for their grade-level curriculum. On day two, attendees will participate in a grade-level breakout session to collaborate with other teachers on how to adapt the material for use in their classrooms. After which participants will depart on one of three field trip options to active mine sites and/or areas of geologic/cultural significance. Death Valley National Park invites you to participate in the pilot of our distance learning program.

Virtual Trips are available until Friday, April 1st, 2022, with registration closing on Friday, March 25th, 2022. You can view information about our current program offerings on our distance learning webpage including how to register for a Virtual Trip.

The National Weather Service office in Las Vegas is hosting their first ever #WildWestWxShowdown and invites everyone to participate.  

16 weather phenomena will battle it out for the most dangerous weather event in the west.  Battles will be all month long and you can follow along on Twitter and Facebook, with morning posts describing the weather phenomena and evening posts declaring a winner.  A printable bracket can be found below.

The Las Vegas Science and Technology is back in person this year.  Please see the below ways in which you or an organization you are with may want to be involved.

Science Is Everywhere Day (May 1, 2022): Science is Everywhere Day highlights the importance of science in our community and allows businesses to showcase science in their organizations for students and families.  If you have a business that does cool science and can open your doors to the public for a free tour, demo, or workshop, this is for you. Please see the attachment for more information regarding this event. Email scifest@lvnhm.org to get involved. 

Science in Schools (May 2 - 6, 2022):  STEM Professionals will be matched with a classroom or school to share their work with students. We need more than 100 speakers this year for any grade level.  Your commitment could be as short as 1 - 2 hours on one day or as long as multiple hours over multiple days, depending on your availability. To sign up to be a speaker, please go to www.scifest.vegas and access the “Get Involved” tab to find the link under "Speak In Schools" .   If you sign up to participate in this, we will work hard to connect you with an appropriate school(s) and teacher(s).  Your matches will be emailed to you and the teachers mid-April to allow you and the school staff to connect and schedule.  The need is great at all grade levels, but please consider being available to modify for any grade level. Giant Expo at the World Market Center (May 7, 2022):   This hands-on expo is expected to have more than 10,000 visitors this year.  We are looking for organizations and businesses that can share hands-on STEM experiences for families throughout the day.  To reserve a booth now, go to www.scifest.vegas and click on the “Get Involved” tab.    If you think you might want to do this but are not sure about what you could do at your booth, please feel free to contact us and we can brainstorm some great ideas.

Good morning. Please see the message below on behalf of the Nevada Science Olympiad Board. Please note, questions should be directed to support@nevadaso.org.

The Nevada Science Olympiad board is seeking qualified event supervisors for the 2022 Virtual Nevada State Tournament to be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Below is a list of the events and times that are still in need of event supervisors.

Interested teachers should send an email to support@nevadaso.org by Wednesday, March 9, 2022, and include:

• Contact information,

• Event preference/availability,

• Disclosure of any affiliation to a competing team that may be viewed as a conflict of interest. 

Those that email their interest and are approved by the Nevada Science Olympiad Tournament Director will receive additional information to register as an event supervisor. CCSD teachers will receive extra duty pay of 8 hours for each event supervised.

Approximate Time Allocations:

• 1 hour to review rules (provided once confirmed as an Event Supervisor).

• 3 hours to prepare the event exam and enter it into the NVSO platform by March 21, 2022.

• 4 hours proctoring the event, grading the tests, and turning in the final scores on Saturday, March 26, 2022.
